But I call it The Inquisitive Toddler because when you are reflecting on this by yourself, through an internal conversation, working on a problem you have, it helps to think of it as if you were talking to a 2-3yr old toddler who asks the endless “why?” questions out of curiosity and wanting to understand the world around them, which can seem big and daunting. If you approach this exercise without self-doubt, out of curiosity, and with an open mind, you will likely reach your answers really quickly and can help your personal growth, your business, your relationships, and make you a better problem solver. It is the basis behind Elon Musk’s First Principles Thinking which breaks down a process to find the root of the problem and questions everything related to how decisions are currently made when solving that problem.

  4. Why was that the Case? As you move deeper into the analysis, you’ll likely begin to uncover organizational, procedural, or systemic issues. The fourth ‘why’ might be: “Why was the quality control process not equipped with adequate testing tools?”
  5. Why was that Lacking? Finally, you’ll reach a point where the root cause becomes evident. By asking one more ‘why,’ you can uncover a critical issue that needs to be addressed. In the case of product defects, the fifth ‘why’ could be: “Why was there a lack of investment in upgrading testing equipment?”
